Mighty, over 140-year-old Douglas firs stand here by the roadside. It's wonderful that old Bismarck, with his foresight, commissioned their planting, and that they have survived the years so well. This old Douglas fir stand in section 44b was planted in 1878 on the orders of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The seeds of the North American tree species were brought to the Sachsenwald by the botanist John C. Booth. Today, more than 20 of the over 40 m tall trees from the first planting still exist.
