The spring pond is the only standing body of water on the Steiger plateau that draws its water from a strata spring. The spring and pond are set in stone, and the pond drains via the Silbergraben through the Hopfengrund to the Gera. The milky-white lime deposits that occasionally appear in the stream, which appear "silvery" due to the water, gave it its name.

The Steigerwald is designated as a landscape protection area (LSG) and FFH area and is mainly made up of beech and oak trees. On the edge of the forest, which is crossed by numerous hiking trails, there are several barracks, such as the Steiger barracks or the Löberfeld barracks. The forest area is cut through in a north-south direction by the federal highway 4, on which the Hubertus restaurant and the former Waldschlösschen are located.
