Mofettes at Lake Laach demonstrate: The Laacher See volcano, Europe's youngest, didn't go extinct 13,000 years ago; it's just dormant. That's what volcanologists say. Laach Castle, also known as the Palatine Castle, is a Salian castle on the Laach Lake opposite the Maria Laach Abbey in the Ahrweiler district. It was located on a rocky spur above the eastern shore of the lake and was temporarily the seat of the Rhenish Counts Palatine. Count Palatine Heinrich von Laach from the House of Luxembourg-Gleiberg (†1095) founded the Laach Monastery in 1093. Laach Castle was demolished around 20 years after the monastery was founded by the Count Palatine's stepson and adopted son, Siegfried von Ballenstedt. The loss of the castle was not a great loss for Siegfried, as he had another castle in the area, Rheineck Castle. Today, only a few traces and the field names "Laacher Burg" and "Alte Burg" indicate its existence. The castle was protected from the land side by two section moats, behind which there were stone towers. The remaining buildings were probably made of wood.

A wooden memorial cross hangs in the rock. As far as I can decipher it says: For souvenirs at our Friend Private Tony Fox * September 4, 1925 † March 7, 1945 in Latvia

Here, Lower Devonian rocks have formed from sien layers. The rock layers were formed from sandstone and silite when the layers pushed through the Rhenish Slate Mountains from Siegen to the West Eifel in the Carboniferous.
