In 1971, the Grevelingenmeer with a surface area of 14,000 hectares was created by damming. In the past, the Grevelingen was mainly important for oyster and mussel farming. Now this salty lake is an attractive area for water sports. In addition, nature receives a lot of attention. For the benefit of pleasure craft, the Mosselbank has been located on the plate directly in front of the water sports island since 1990. On the other side is Herkingen on the former island of Goeree-Overflakkee. In your field of vision on the right you can see the Grevelingendam. It is one of the most important connections between Schouwen-Duiveland and the mainland. As part of the Delta Plan, this dam was built between Bruinisse and Goeree-Overflakkee in 1961-1965. The northern channel, the Bocht van Sint Jacob, was closed off by dumping a dam of stones using a cable car. On 1 April 1965, the Grevelingendam was opened to traffic.

The Brouwersdam is one of the hotspots in Zeeland. The 6.5 kilometer long dam is the connection between the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland. With the Grevelingen on one side and the North Sea on the other, the Brouwersdam is extremely suitable for water sports and relaxation.

After the closure of the North Sea, Grevelingenmeer became the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe. The salinity of the Grevelingenmeer is maintained by the Brouwerssluis, through which seawater is let in. The lake is mainly used for water sports and other recreation. It is classified as a protected Natura 2000 site.

The Brouwersdam is a hotspot for kite surfers, on the wide beach of the Kabbelaarsbank you can learn to beach surf or sit in the "Natural High" and have something to eat and drink or watch seals at the Brouwerssluis. In "normal" times there are open-air concerts on Brouwersdam.

Wonderful to go there by bike. 🚴🏻♀️🚴🏼🚴🏼♂️Great view, great asphalt and enough space to drive. If there is too much wind it can be very exhausting.

The Brouwersdam is the seventh building of the Delta Works. The construction connects the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland. From the cycle path you have a beautiful view of the Grevelingenmeer and the North Sea.
