The Wipper once ate its way deep through the rocks of the Hainleite. Today there are steep rock formations and cliffs at the breakthrough. Already in the Bronze Age there was a fortified complex on the exposed Kohenstein on the east side of the valley. It was later expanded into a hill fort. The elevation above the valley is popularly known as Schwedenschanze.
