Don't expect too many plants or even a botanical garden. But it's a nice way to get to the Rhine, away from the tourist crowds. Also because it's a dead-end street. It's also a place with a beautiful history. Of course, there are plenty of those in Basel.

In 2017, the city gardening department restored the valuable inventory of the Old University garden and interpreted the historical design concept in a contemporary way. The former master gardener Karl Schlecht bequeathed his estate to the city of Basel in 2005. The condition was that his inheritance should be used for a "green Basel". The city gardening department and the community of heirs decided to restore the Old University garden. The impressive but hidden terraced garden was one of the first botanical gardens in Europe. First the university's medicinal garden and later a private pleasure garden, the terraced garden fell into oblivion and has now been made publicly accessible in a new form as a quiet place in the middle of the city. Facilities/park infrastructure A pavilion and a water basin make the Sarasinian pleasure garden come alive again. Seating invites you to linger. Natural values The Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) is one of the oldest of its kind in the canton of Basel-Stadt. The new planting is based on the original Hortus medicus.
