Very beautiful garden with a wonderful view of the Rhine.

Don't expect too many plants or even a botanical garden. But it's a nice way to get to the Rhine, away from the tourist crowds. Also because it's a dead-end street. It's also a place with a beautiful history. Of course, there are plenty of those in Basel.

Fountain in Augustinergasse ⛲ - Basilisk creature at the top - Basel 🇨🇭

In 2017, the city gardening department restored the valuable inventory of the Old University garden and interpreted the historical design concept in a contemporary way. The former master gardener Karl Schlecht bequeathed his estate to the city of Basel in 2005. The condition was that his inheritance should be used for a "green Basel". The city gardening department and the community of heirs decided to restore the Old University garden. The impressive but hidden terraced garden was one of the first botanical gardens in Europe. First the university's medicinal garden and later a private pleasure garden, the terraced garden fell into oblivion and has now been made publicly accessible in a new form as a quiet place in the middle of the city. Facilities/park infrastructure A pavilion and a water basin make the Sarasinian pleasure garden come alive again. Seating invites you to linger. Natural values The Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) is one of the oldest of its kind in the canton of Basel-Stadt. The new planting is based on the original Hortus medicus. One of many beautiful fountains in Basel. This one was decorated in 1530 with a fountain post and basilisk looking down on the Basel shield. It was called the "Old Augustinian Fountain" and was replaced in 1846 by the current "Augustinian Fountain".

The Ermitage is a large and lovingly designed green area from 1785, with three idyllic ponds, several romantic grottos, historical buildings, pretty walking paths between the shore and the edge of the forest and, on top of it all, the castle ruins of Bierseck Castle, as the crowning glory of the whole. It is a wonderful place for physical and mental relaxation, but those seeking peace and quiet should visit outside of the holidays or weekends. It is a real visitor magnet. Warning! The grottos can only be reached on foot and via steep stairs. The rest of the garden is mostly wheelchair accessible and suitable for pushchairs. There are no parking spaces directly at the Ermitage!
