It's called Laugarfell and is a cute little place with wonderful Icelandic food (half board should be booked as it's worth every cent). The small hot pot is magical in the evening under the starry sky with an unobstructed view of the landscape with snow-capped mountain peaks... the silence is only interrupted by the occasional sheep bell 😊

Another viewpoint marked on the map. This point is on the orographic left bank. The iconic basalt columns can also be admired here.

Litlanesfoss, also known as Stuðlabergsfoss, is a beautiful waterfall surrounded by Iceland's iconic basalt columns. The basalt columns surrounding the waterfall can be up to 20 meters (65 feet) high. This waterfall is 30 meters high in two steps and plunges into a small pond. The basalt columns surrounding the waterfall are approximately 15 to 20 meters high, making them the tallest basalt columns in the entire country. As written above, the highlight is out of place.

The narrow Hengafoss ("hanging waterfall") is one of the highest in the country (120m). He comes from a plateau along a black and red striped wall and digs out a small ravine with a deafening sound. During the descent you have a beautiful view of the lake.

The mountain hut is a good base for hikes to the waterfalls. For an overnight stay you should make a booking in good time via the homepage.

When you visit Hengifoss, you not only embark on a hike to one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland, but also on a journey through time. At 118 meters, Hengifoss falls powerfully and testifies to the unbridled natural power of this island. But it's not just its height that is impressive, but also the history it carries. On the way to the waterfall you will be greeted by Litlanesfoss with its fascinating basalt columns. These natural formations give a first taste of what awaits you at Hengifoss. While the waterfall itself is an impressive sight, it is the reddish, grainy layers of clay in the background that attract attention. They were formed from volcanic ash, the so-called tephra, and owe their intense color to the iron oxide they contain. The best way to experience this natural spectacle is in the morning or mid-morning, when the sun's rays hit the rock layers and make them glow. Hengifoss is not only a testament to Iceland's volcanic activity, but also a souvenir from the last Ice Age. A huge glacier once rolled through Fljótsdalur, and the smaller glaciers in the side valleys shaped the land in their own way. What remains today are impressive slopes and gorges that were created by the erosion of the watercourses. Hengifoss is one of these unique natural spectacles that bridges the height difference with an impressive waterfall. The hike starts from the parking lot along road 931 near Egilsstaðir. After around an hour and a half you will reach Hengifoss, where the path there is already peppered with breathtaking views and rock formations.
