Essentially, Runkesten is just one of countless large boulders that were transported southward from the mountainous regions by the 2- to 3-kilometer-thick glaciers of the Ice Age and can be found throughout Sweden. Several coincidences make Runkesten a rare rocking stone. Namely, when the ice melted around 10,000 years ago, it came to rest on a straight rock, perfectly balanced on a downward-pointing point. The contact surface is so small that the 260-ton stone can be moved several centimeters using pure muscle power.

The Karlevistenen is one of the more remarkable runestones in Sweden. The 130 centimetre high boulder is made of volcanic porphyry granite and therefore definitely does not come from the island, but most likely from the Oskarshamn region. Part of the inscription states that the stone was set for a warrior named Sibbe, son of Foldar. In fact, there is an old drawing from the 17th century that shows a runestone and two burial mounds there. The graves have since been levelled by agricultural use, only the stone remains. The other part of the inscription consists of a skaldic verse. This text clearly shows that a great Danish warrior, probably a chieftain, was buried at this site. The Karlevistenen is unique in terms of this verse. It is the only known poem by an Old Norse skald written in runic script that still exists in the original.

The Karlevistenen is a runestone from the Viking Age that is over 1,000 years old and is also the oldest runestone on Öland. It stands in its original location in a field on the west coast of the island, near the small town of Karlevi.

To the north of the island near Byrum is the most famous and clearly formed raukeng area (limestone columns) on Öland. The strange stone formations were formed over millions of years by the constant movement of the sea over the limestone and are a protected area.
