The New Zealand fur seal is easy to recognise by its pointed snout, long whiskers and small ears on its head. The marine mammals gained notoriety through the once popular seal hunt. Their fur was traded at top prices and made into luxurious coats. The animals were on the verge of extinction when hunting was banned in 1894. On the North Island, you can see the cute seals at Cape Palliser near Wellington and on the Wairarapa coast in Castlepoint. You would love to stay and watch them all day. The older ones stretch out in the sun and the little ones suckle, play catch or call desperately for their mother. The roar and thunder of the surf provides the background music.
