The Vachaer Stein is somewhat hidden on the federal highway. Incidentally, this is one of the most important passes over the Thuringian Forest and follows the historic Via Regia from Leipzig to Frankfurt am Main. Napoleon also used this road after losing the Battle of the Nations. During the GDR era, the Vachaer Stein also marked the start and finish point of the Rennsteig.

The small pass represents the transition over the ridge between the Nüsttal near Gotthards and the valley of the Siebertsgraben near Reinhards. The turnpike alludes to the border situation that has existed here since 1815. After the end of the Napoleonic era, the Congress of Vienna reorganized numerous territories. The former Bishopric of Fulda and its short-lived successor states were divided between the neighbors. The former Fulda office of Geisa with Reinhard fell to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. The former Fulda office of Bieberstein became part of the (titular) Electorate of Hesse-Kassel, which was annexed by Prussia almost 50 years later. Even today, the federal state border between Thuringia and Hesse runs here.

At the Ascherbrück, the road between Ruhla and Etterwinden crosses the Rennsteig, making it the third road crossing over the Thuringian Forest from the west, which gradually rises towards the southeast. At 566 m, this crossing is significantly higher than the two passes further west, Hohe Sonne and Vachaer Stein, both of which only reach heights of up to 400 m, while the next crossing, the Glasbachwiese, already climbs to 700 m. In contrast to the Hohe Sonne and the Vachaer Stein, this is not a federal road, but a small, narrow local connecting road, which in any case has significantly less traffic than the two aforementioned passes and is therefore much more relaxed to walk. Unfortunately, there is no view at the top of the pass, as it is in the middle of the forest, but there is a snack bar with a beer garden next to the road. (Source: https://www.quaeldich.de)

The white sign with the biker above the green R is the hint for the Rennsteig Höhenradweg, which meanders around the original hiking trail. With my fully, I preferred the trails of the hiking route 😉

The top of the picture fir tree with a pass height of 496 m above sea level. NN marks the border between Hesse and Thuringia. The Auffharten of Gotthards on the Hessian side and Ketten on the Thuringian side is each almost 2 km long and has up to 10% in the steepest passages.
