Kletterkönig120 - The pass crossing the Thuringian Forest in the course of the B84 is marked by the so-called Vachaer (or Förthaer) stone. The B84 follows in this section of the old trade route Via Regia from Frankfurt a.M. to Leipzig.
The passage at the Vachaer Stein represents the westernmost pass of the Thuringian Forest, which begins (or ends, depending on the perspective of the beholder) only a few kilometers away on the Werra. At the same time, it is likely to be the lowest, as the ridge of the mountains here only reaches heights between 400 and 500 m, while the Thuringian Forest further southeast to almost 1000 m increases.
At the same time, the B84 at the Vachaer Stein crosses the Rennsteig, the longest high-altitude hiking trail in Germany, which begins at Hörschel on the Werra and leads over 168 km over the crest of the Thuringian Forest to Blankenstein an der Saale.
To the chagrin of the cyclists, the street is also heavily frequented in today's time, at least during the week is to be expected with a lot of truck traffic, so that a better weekend should be chosen for a drive.
Incidentally, the pass was also used in 1813 by the army of Napoleon who had been beaten in the Battle of Nations near Leipzig on the retreat.

The Vachaer or Förthaer Stein (on 372 NN) has been an obelisk and signpost since 1833 marking the crossing of the Rennsteig through the old trade route from Leipzig via Eisenach to Frankfurt. This transition is one of the most important Thuringian Forest passes with those at the Kalten Küche near Spechtsbrunn and Frauenwald.

The white sign with the biker above the green R is the hint for the Rennsteig Höhenradweg, which meanders around the original hiking trail. With my fully, I preferred the trails of the hiking route 😉
