Evening atmosphere at Lake Schöhsee. Situated in a hilly landscape, the lake is bordered by extensively managed grassland to the north and east, a mixed forest to the southeast, an allotment garden and a cemetery on the southern shore, as well as private gardens, a fishing club on the western shore, and a path that runs directly along the lake for approximately 800 meters. West of the cemetery is a large, unguarded bathing area, and another bathing area can be found in the forest.

Lake Schöhsee is located in the heart of Plön's urban area, nestled between Lake Trammer, Lake Behler, and Lake Großer Plön. It covers 78 hectares and has a maximum depth of 29.3 meters. Due to the lake's low nutrient content and the resulting low algae growth, it is one of the clearest lakes in Schleswig-Holstein. In the summer months, visibility can reach up to 3.5 meters. The lake is home to three wooded islands known as the Kleiner Warder, Mittlerer Warder, and Großer Warder. During the winter months, the lake is home to up to 2,000 tufted ducks, among other bird species. It is also a breeding ground for great crested grebes, kingfishers, oystercatchers, and many other waterfowl species. Lake Schöhsee can be easily circumnavigated on foot along a designated hiking trail. The circular trail, with its magnificent lake views, is approximately 5.4 km long and is therefore suitable for families and beginners.
