A picturesque ruin in the heart of Lahr. "The settlement of Lahr grew up around the Stork Tower Lahr, a moated castle belonging to the Geroldseck family dating from 1220, and was presumably granted city status in 1278." Excerpt from https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lahr/Schwarzwald "The Stork Tower Lahr, also known as Lahr Castle, is the remaining vestige of a medieval moated castle and the landmark of the city of Lahr. It takes its name from the storks that regularly nested there until the 1960s and found food in the wetlands around the city." More information here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storchenturm_Lahr

The Stork Tower is the remnant of a medieval castle complex built around 1218/1220. It was one of four round corner towers of the castle complex. The castle served as the starting point for the settlement that later became the town of Lahr (granted town rights in 1278). The tower itself served as a prison until 1861. The name "Stork Tower" comes from the fact that storks regularly nested on the tower until the 1960s.

The Stork Tower is the last remaining part of a castle built around 1220 by the Lords of Geroldseck. Its construction was approved by King Frederick II. A settlement quickly developed around it, granting it town charter in 1278. After the castle fell into disrepair in the 16th century, the city of Lahr demolished the entire complex except for the tower in the 18th century. This tower later served as a prison and is now a historical landmark. Due to its elevated position, it is partially underground. It takes its name from the storks that regularly nested there until the 1960s and foraged in the surrounding wet meadows. The Mahlberg Castle Church is a jewel of the Rococo, one of the rare central buildings in the country. Its octagonal shape dates back to the Middle Ages, from the time of the Crusaders. In 1734 it was given its baroque form. False vaults were added, and the decorative clock gable was erected. Three saints (Joseph, Catherine, James) remind us of the transience of life and the preciousness of the time we are given. The inner shell of the room was created in 1762: like an open columned hall, with valuable stucco, eight pictures from the life of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the mighty alliance coat of arms of the House of Baden-Baden, whose officials resided in the castle until 1771 and whose red and gold colors still adorn the facade today. The original roof turret was replaced by a sandstone bell tower in 1890. It was the state church until 1803. In the following year, the Evangelical Church of Mahlberg, which had existed until 1622 and whose members had subsequently been assigned to Kippenheim, regained its independence from the House of Baden-Durlach. The castle church was handed over to the Evangelicals.

The beautifully restored Renaissance castle of Schmieheim was built between 1607 and 1610 by Friedrich Bock von Gerstheim. The Bock family was an old Strasbourg patrician family that had owned Schmieheim since 1449. Today, the castle houses, among other things, the local administration.
