The old town of Burgdorf, consisting of the upper town and the lower town, is beautifully situated on the river Emme. The mighty Burgdorf Castle towers majestically over the town.

Very well maintained castle and garden. Also a very beautiful view towards the west and the Stockhorn range.

Trachselwald Castle cannot be reached by public transport. Entry is free. But be careful! Trachselwald is not wheelchair accessible. Although parts such as the keep, the castle courtyard and the castle garden are open to the public, caution is still required when entering the keep. Enter at your own risk! warns a sign. And rightly so. The wooden steps are a bit worn and the last part below the top of the tower consists of a stone and extremely narrow spiral staircase passage with some high steps that only has space for one person. People with a tendency towards claustrophobia or hikers with backpacks will have a hard time. Crossing the stairs is impossible. But you are rewarded with a great view.

The unique topographical situation of the castle rock led to fortifications in early historical times. The high medieval fortress 🏰 was first mentioned in documents in 1130. In the 11th century it passed to the Counts of Rheinfelden and in 1090 to the Dukes of Zähringen, then to the Kyburgers and finally to Bern. In front of the gate tower, the approximately 7 meter deep moat, which was largely exposed again in 1982, is visible, two thirds of which is covered by the tuff arch bridge, which was last renovated in 1581–1587. The mighty defensive wall made of magnificent sandstone and tuff blocks with two semicircular towers and the former gate tower is also visible here. The castle has preserved all the essential parts from its main construction period: two free-standing, high defensive towers and a massive 13th century defensive wall flanked by a moat, rampart and smaller towers protect the castle plateau to the north. Towards the south are the representative large buildings of the four-story palace and hall, which contained a total of three large halls, of which the smallest, the now so-called Knight's Hall, has been preserved intact. The volume of the largest room in the hall was divided into two floors and numerous individual rooms in the 16th century. There were two castle chapels, the smaller of which has been preserved with its Gothic frescoes.
