Originally built by King Christian IV (1588-1648) and once owned by the Danish naval hero Niels Juel (1629-97), Valdemars Slot is Denmark's largest private residence and the only privately owned royal palace. Located on the island of Tåsinge, the estate is one of Denmark's most scenic spots. Vejlen used to be a fjord connected to the sea. In 1765, a dam with a lock was built to close off the fjord and drain the land behind it. On New Year's Eve 1904/05, the dam broke. Although it was rebuilt, Tåsinge Vejle was never completely drained again. A very shallow brackish water lake was created. Vejle has been owned by the Danish Nature Agency for several years. Various water birds breed here. During the migration period, the lake and the shallow areas off the coast are resting places for various migratory and resting birds.

The nature reserve - with its three artificial islands - was designed specifically for the needs of the birds so that they can rest in peace.

The castle is located on the site of the medieval castle Kærsgård. King Christian IV partially had this demolished when he had the palace built from 1639 to 1644 for his son Valdemar Christian from his second marriage to Kirsten Munk. The remains of the castle were integrated into the new building. The castle was built in the classic Renaissance style.

Tryggelev Nor is one of Denmark's most bird-rich sanctuaries. Viewpoints have been set up in Tryggelev Lagoon so you can watch the birds without disturbing the birds. In September 2018, Tryggelev Nor received a new floating observation shed at water level, the first of its kind in Denmark and is called "the innovative observation shed".
