The ascent is well laid out, in the middle of the dune. Some steps are a bit sandy and crooked, but everything fits. The handrail is solidly built and also nice and smooth. No danger of catching a splinter.

The Schmiedberg lookout point was probably originally part of a fortress of the Slavs right by the sea. From here you can see how narrow Rerik is. You can also see some houses of the anti-aircraft artillery school here.
