The Drautal is the main valley of the Austrian state of Carinthia and East Tyrol. The Tyrolean upper reaches of the Drau are called the Pustertal. Lower Drautal at the level of Feistritz towards the northwest The Rosental near Ferlach The Drautal runs predominantly in a west-east direction and is one of the three large longitudinal valley furrows in Austria that are associated with geological fault lines of the Alpine mountain formation. In the border area of South/East Tyrol it forms a piece of the Periadriatic Seam.

It is a pleasure to cycle through the wide valley.

The route through this quiet side valley between the Drautal in the west and the federal highway 98 in the east is quite challenging for cyclists because it offers a very bumpy profile with crisp climbs, but also relaxing descents and is also very winding in parts. In terms of landscape, however, this route is highly recommended. This valley is also known for its marble quarries at the apex of the route and two workshops that produce sculptures. Overall, a very worthwhile route away from the main paths.

Along the trail in the gorge area one can find unique plants such as the spotted orchid, which is a protected native species of orchid. Sure-footedness and suitable footwear are prerequisites for walking the gorge path. Especially on hot summer days, the ascent through the gorge is a refreshing and cooling alternative to the hiking trails on the Millstätter Alm
