The tunnel bunker in Belecke was built as an air raid shelter during the Second World War and today offers an insight into the history and horrors of war. Guided tours allow visitors to view the facility and learn more about this period.

Short (paid) tours depending on demand, at least every 45 minutes, lots of explanations - not just about stalagmites, stalactites and stalagnates, but about the entire formation and previous cave. Dogs are also allowed on a leash, just note that there are a few stairs. PS: Sorry, guys, but did you understand that the highlight is called "BilsteinHÖHLE" and not "Tierpark" or "Bilsteinfelsen"? It would be nice if the photos were uploaded accordingly!

The entrance to an old slate mine. You can look in through the gate and take a break on the bench.

Some idiot put his logs right in front of the entrance! You have to climb to see the entrance! Hopefully someone will take it away soon! 😤

According to eyewitness reports, the tunnel bunker in the Propsteiberg was built by the local construction company Beele using forced laborers in the autumn/winter of 1943/44 and was intended to provide shelter for around 400 people. The construction was a reaction to the increasing air raids by the Allies, in which Belecke represented a potential target as an armaments industry location and railway junction. The accessible part of the bunker has a total length of 127.1 m. The length in the east-west direction is 87.7 m, the length in the north-south direction is 39.4 m. The bunker has a total area of 239.2 m sqm and a total volume of 445 kbm. The dimensions roughly correspond to the specifications in the "Ordinance on the construction of air raid shelters" of September 17, 1943.

Just take a little break during the hike and examine the Bilstein caves. If you have a little more time, you can book the big tour, which goes deeper and you can see even more of the stalactite cave(s).

The tunnel bunker dates back to 1943. It is approx. 140 meters long and was supposed to protect around 400 people from the air raids in World War II. In 2019 and 2020, the air raid shelter was made accessible again with funds from the NRW funding program "Heimatzeugnis" and can be visited as part of guided tours. On April 7, 1945, the peaceful handover of Beleckes to the Americans was negotiated here. More information at: https://stuetings-muehle.de/historischer-stollenbunker/
