The summit is located just outside the parking lot. It is a steep hill to the top where you can overlook the valley (unless it’s super foggy)

Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain in the United States east of the Mississippi River. The peak sits at 6,684 feet and is surrounded by hiking trails, scenic driving and biking roads, picnic areas, and campgrounds. You'll likely see a lot of other visitors once you get up here to the parking lot at the summit. There is a small, seasonal concession stand, bathrooms, and a water fountain here at the top.

Flat Spring Knob offers some decent views into Mount Mitchell State Park. Big Butt Trail has lots of trees without a lot of views along the trail, but the views from the tops of Flat Spring Knob and Little Butt make up for being trapped in the trees the rest of the hike.

The Black Mountain Crest Trail is known for being a technical, rooty, rocky, wet trail. This section feels like you're moving through the rain forest, and there is a lot of up and down in the trail. Make sure to use the ropes when you get to them!

Big Tom stands at 6,581 feet and is one of best lookouts on the Black Crest Trail. The rocky summit has views of the ridge all the way to Mount Mitchell summit, and you can also see the northern part of the ridge all the way back to Celo Knob on a clear day.

This section of trail between the summit of Celo Knob and the top of the Woody Ridge Trail has wide open views to the west. If making the climb up from Bowlens Creek, this marks the beginning of a long, technical ridge traverse to the summit of Mount Mitchell, which is 7 miles away.

At 6,648 feet, Mount Craig is the second highest mountain in the eastern United States (only behind Mount Mitchell). The peak of the mountain is rockier than most of its neighbors and requires a little bit of rock hopping.

Mount Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi River at 6,684 feet. There is a cool little lookout tower at the top. There is also a parking lot with bathrooms and snacks for sale just at the base of the short summit trail.
