In June 2006, during the renovation works of the Plaza de España, based on a project by the architects Herzog & de Meuron, remains of the perimeter wall of the said structure appeared. Given the historical importance of the discovery, it was decided to protect and enhance this heritage resource, incorporating an underground gallery into the new architectural layout to make it accessible. Free admission.

Castle that in 1782 was rebuilt on a small fort, becoming the second most important castle at the time. In the different attacks of the British squadron of 1657 (Blake), 1706 (Jennings) and 1797 (Nelson) he was harshly punished. In 1951 it was declared unusable for defense purposes. It has also been used many times as a dungeon.
