Known as the "Garganta Divina", this route between Cain (Leon, Castile and Leon) and Poncebos (Asturias) offers you the opportunity to walk between mountains that rise more than 2,000 meters above the bottom of the imposing gorge dug by the Cares River. You will see mythical peaks, cross bridges that connect both sides of the gorge, go through about 70 tunnels carved into the rock and witness an amazing natural spectacle.

9월 7, 2023, Narrow Gorge Views on the Ruta del Cares
Caution: This is not a circular route. The route along the river is not officially part of the Ruta del Cares and ends in a dead end. A sign warns of dangerous rock falls (which we experienced ourselves) and sloping paths. It's best to just follow the signs for Ruta Cares (approx. 3 hours).

The bridge over the Rio Cares is a road bridge that is part of the Carretera Cangas de Onís - Panes, a road with the number AS-114 that connects the municipalities of Cangas de Onís and Peñamellera Baja, in Asturias, Spain. The bridge is located near the village of Puente Poncebos, where the Rio Cares flows into the Rio Duje. The bridge is a viewpoint with spectacular views of the river and canyon, which are part of the Picos de Europa National Park. The bridge is also a starting point for several hiking and cycling routes, such as the famous Ruta del Cares, which runs along the river between Puente Poncebos and Caín, or the route to Bulnes, a mountain village that can only be reached on foot or by cable car . The bridge was built in 1921 as part of a project to build a road between Cangas de Onís and Panes. The road was completed in 1935, but was badly damaged during the Spanish Civil War. The road was later repaired and improved and is now an important link between the eastern and western parts of Asturias.

The large hole in the rock with the interesting striped coloring is obviously one of the most popular photo opportunities on the Routa del Cares, along with the gorge itself. In the photos it almost looks like there is a path leading up here.

If you start in Poncebos, this is where the most beautiful part of the Ruta del Cares begins. From here to the dam wall just before Caín, the gorge gets narrower and narrower, the rock faces ever steeper - and the photos ever more beautiful. The rest of the way to Caín is almost completely flat and the path is very easy to walk, so that you can enjoy the divine to the fullest.

We have made the walk in 1 direction, from Poncebos to Cain. At the end of the route you can take a bus (change trains and extra travel time) or a taxi to the starting point. Keep in mind that this will take you 2.5 hours. The road goes around the Picos. The taxi ride costs €160.
