The Museo de la Historia de Arrecife is the history museum of Lanzarote's capital city. It is located directly in the Castillo de San Gabriel, a small 16th-century fortress situated on a tiny islet in the middle of Arrecife Bay. It can be reached via two charming stone bridges (the Puente de las Bolas being the most famous).

The museum is located in the Castillo de San José, a former 18th-century coastal fortress transformed into a modern art museum in the 1970s by César Manrique. Today, it combines history, architecture, contemporary art, and spectacular sea views. The collection focuses primarily on art from the second half of the 20th century (c. 1950–1980). A particularly noteworthy feature is the restaurant on the lower level of the castle: - large panoramic windows directly overlooking the sea - views of the port of Arrecife - modern interior design by Manrique.

The castle was built in 1571.

Inside there is a small museum about the history of the city.

ATTENTION: The 'Castillo de San José' was part of the defense system of Arrecife against pirates and was never a prison

The tourism centers are made up of the areas of culture and art (CACT - Centros de Arte, Cultura y Turismo)
