In the middle of a cliff, on the slopes of the west of Matagalls, the sanctuary of Sant Segimon rises. We find it documented in 1290 and there is evidence of the presence of hermits in the 15th century. They had Fra's treatment and had a special habit. The devotion has its origin in the legend that says that Segimon, the son of Gondeval, king of Burgundy, disdainful of his courtly existence, made Hermit living in the cave near the building between the years 516 and 520. Here, he marched when he came to fetch his father to be crowned king. The construction of the Sanctuary begins, according to the legend, centuries later when a pastor and a bull from the highest Puig de la Vall found the two wooden crosses that the saint had left buried in the cave. The Sanctuary was burned in 1810 by the French troops under the orders of General Saint-Cyr and was restored by the villagers and volunteers of neighboring villages. In 1837, following confiscation, the Sanctuary and its patrimony became the property of the owner of Can Gad. The sanctuary and shelter were subjected to nonsensical destruction and depredation during the Civil War. Restoration works are currently underway and we hope that it will be able to be visited again soon.
