10월 18, 2025, Kasteel Hof Ter Saksen
Beveren purchased the estate in 1982. It boasts the striking 18th-century neoclassical castle, but the farm, ice cellars, and orangery are also worth a visit. During the Middle Ages, the estate was called "Shaecx" after the oldest residents of the fiefdom, the Noethaeckx family. This is how the place got its name. It was Jean-Baptist Versmessen, chief alderman of the Land van Waas castellany, who laid out the estate in its current form in 1781. The English landscape garden appears in 19th-century illustrations. It remained in the Versmessen family until textile manufacturer Edmond Meert purchased the property. The castle was severely damaged during WWII, leaving only a ruin. Restoration took place between 2004 and 2007, and it is now hoped to restore the interior to its former grandeur.

Hof ter Welle, also known as the Oud Geestelijk Hof is a former monastery and moated castle in Beveren, East Flanders that has been functioning as a heritage house since 2017. The history starts in the 13th century. The estate evolved from a moated farmstead, with a central courtyard, in the late Middle Ages to a Renaissance castle, inhabited until the seventeenth century. The last changes were made in the 19th century by the then resident diocesan sisters.

5월 27, 2025, Graventoren - Rupelmonde
Few buildings in the Waasland region hold such a mythical allure as the Graventoren (Counts' Tower) in Rupelmonde. The names associated with it certainly contribute to that. This tower, for example, is the remnant of a moated castle with no fewer than 17 towers, once owned by the Counts of Flanders. This colossal fortress protected the Scheldt River from attackers and conquerors. Mercator's Dungeon Mercator also plays a key role in this story. When he shared his revolutionary insights with the world, he was promptly sent to the dungeon by the church authorities. Guess where that dungeon was located? Exactly, in the cellars of the Graventoren. Here he was imprisoned for seven months, accused of heresy. A Bloody History Mercator, however, was not the only one to enter the cellars of the moated castle. Many dissidents suffered the same fate, and often worse. A stay in the dungeons of the Graventoren (Counts' Tower) often ended with a bloody decapitation. While the Counts of Flanders may have enjoyed legendary status in history, they were certainly not gentlemen. Count Robert of Bethune once even threw his own son in jail here, accused of high treason. A kind of chamber arrest before its time, you might say. At the end of the 17th century, the moated castle came to an end. The fortress was drastically destroyed, and the rubble was reused for other buildings. For example, the church of Rupelmonde was built with materials from the castle ruins.

When you say Rupelmonde, you say Mercator and the Graventoren. This historic tower is a former moated castle that is linked to a bloody history. The Graventoren was once owned by the Counts of Flanders. This colossal fortress protected the Scheldt from attackers and conquerors. Historical context: Mercator's dungeon Mercator also plays a leading role in this story. When he shared his revolutionary insights with the world, he was promptly sent to the dungeon by the church authorities. Guess where that dungeon was located? Exactly, in the cellars of the Graventoren. He was locked up here for seven months, accused of heresy. A bloody history However, Mercator was not the only one who saw the cellars of the moated castle from the inside. Many dissidents suffered the same fate, and often worse. A stay in the dungeons of the Graventoren often ended with a bloody beheading. The Counts of Flanders may have a legendary status in history, but they were not sweethearts. Count Robrecht van Bethune once even threw his own son in jail here, accused of high treason. A kind of room arrest avant la lettre, you could say. At the end of the 17th century, the curtain fell for the moated castle. The fortress was then drastically destroyed and the rubble was reused for other buildings. For example, the church of Rupelmonde was built with materials from the ruins of the castle.

The Hof ter Saksen castle in Beveren is not only dazzlingly beautiful to look at, it is especially the park that is a real eye-catcher. The Hof ter Saksen castle park plays with the senses of the visitor. And the plants are so beautiful and sophisticated that each season gives its own colour, atmosphere and identity. You can stroll there for free from 10 am, in the summer until 8 pm and in the winter until 4.30 pm. Dogs on a leash are only welcome on the designated paths, not in the stream valley, the nature garden and the high-stem orchard. More information at https://www.waasland.be/hof-ter-saksen-0

Unfortunately the tower was not open, but it is still a beautiful site to walk past. A nice surprise and definitely worth taking a detour from your route.

In 1550, knight Willem van Waelwijck united the existing lordships of Van der Moeren and Willemaers into a fief, the "Hof van Walburg", named after his wife Walburgh. He had a new building constructed there, a typical moated castle in traditional sand and brick style. In addition to the castle, the domain consisted of an orchard, a garden with two avenues. It included an upper and lower court. For many years, the title "Lord of Walburg" was transferred by inheritance or sale. The successive owners gave the castle domain various purposes, including a brewery, a pharmacy and a residence. In 1789, the French Republic abolished the title Lord of Walburg. In 1846, the castle came into the hands of the Van Naemen family. Jozef Felix Van Naemen renovated the castle according to the then current taste and lifestyle. The domain acquired a purely residential character. The last residents were the unmarried sisters Alix, Gabriélla and Elisabeth Van Naemen. The grounds of the domain were expropriated in 1949. In the same year, the Sint-Niklaas municipal council decided to purchase the "castle with dependencies and lands". In 1950, part of the domain was lost for the construction of the Parklaan. In 1952, the castle domain, redesigned by landscape architect Braeckman, was officially opened as a city park. In 1975, the castle was protected as a monument and the surroundings as a landscape. In 1983, the city council had a restoration file drawn up for the castle. In the same year, the bandstand, which stood on the Grote Markt until 1966, was rebuilt in the vicinity of the castle. In 1987, the city park was given its current name, the "Romain De Vidtspark" named after the mayor of Sint-Niklaas who was the driving force behind the purchase of the castle. In 1994, the restored and redesigned Walburg castle was reopened to the public. The caretaker's house was protected as a monument in 1999. Source: information board on site

The castle (Zamanstraat 49 and 49D) houses two of the three branches of the Stedelijk Museum (SteM): the Mercator Museum and Curiosum. In addition to the Mercator collection dating back to the 16th century, the Mercator Museum also has a ‘Modern cartography’ department. Curiosum is - as the name suggests - a collection of curiosities. In a plan to reorganise the Sint-Niklaas museums under the name "MAP" (Museums at the Park), the Mercator Museum will move to the right wing of the SteM Zwijgershoek this year (2025). This space, where the permanent collection used to be, has a surface area that is twice as large as the old Mercator Museum. This gives the opportunity to show the collection to the public in a new and unique way. Source: https://www.sint-niklaas.be/

The Verloren Bos borders the area De Buylaers, but unlike the Buylaers this is a former drifting sand area. In 1899-1900 the Kasteel Verloren Bos was built here, and the Verloren Bos is actually the park of the castle. This park was designed in landscape style and included a number of ponds, a folly and an ice cellar.

The Castle is a villa built in 1899 by industrialist Gonzales Cock, where you can still experience some of the grandeur of the past here and there: the beautiful mosaic in the entrance hall of the castle, the wooden floor - decorated with beautiful motifs - or the authentic cellar vaults, to name just a few elements.

The moated castle monastery Hof Ter Welle is a gem. This former orphanage, whose history dates back to the 13th century, was resurrected in 2017 as a Heritage House for the municipality of Beveren. Since a thorough renovation, the white castle on the Anna Piersdreef has been shining like never before. A very remarkable thing about this building: the chapel is attached to the castle. That immediately explains the other name of this historic place: Oud Geestelijk Hof. The social factor of the orphanage is still present today. Opposite the castle building, there are still - albeit in more recent buildings - service centres for special youth care and other care facilities. But the castle site itself is now mainly a Heritage House. Not to be confused with Kasteel Cortewalle.
