A dignified, impressive building in a wonderful park. A must-see.

This imposing brick castle was built between 1360 and 1365 by order of Galeazzo Visconti and served as a fortification and residence. The north wing of the castle was destroyed at the battle of Pavia (1525) between the French and the Spanish. Petrarch loved the building and assembled a rich library there, which later moved to France. The large courtyard has arcades and an ornate loggia with twin windows.

The Visconti castle was finished in just five years in 1365 under the impetus of Galeazzo II Visconti. The elegant architectural solutions, such as the double and triple lancet windows on the façade, reveal the vocation of this building conceived from the beginning as a residence rather than a fortress. Purchased by the municipality in the first half of the twentieth century, the castle now hosts some sections of the Civic Museums and other cultural events.

Impossible not to be conquered by the beauty of the Castello Visconteo in Pavia. The stronghold is immersed in a park and represents an imposing medieval fortress in the heart of a city. Despite its grandeur, it is harmonious and luminous. The interior can only be visited in the afternoon, but the courtyard is very beautiful and the museums are interesting.
