The castle of Lettere was built around the tenth century to defend the borders of the northern part, it ensured control of the two sides of the Lattari Mountains.

The first nucleus of the village that arose in the current municipality of Roccapiemonte was originally born in the immediate vicinity of the walls of the "Rocca di San Quirico" whose ruins are still present today. The fortress was built by the will of the Lombard prince Guaimario IV of Salerno in the year 1042 on Mount Solano with the primary purpose of defending the surrounding valleys from the Saracens who in that period continuously plundered southern Italy. Of the fortress of San Quirico currently only a few ruins remain, among which we can clearly see both the triple walls and the two gates together with the cylindrical lookout tower.
