The Castle of Lettere and the remains of the cathedral represent the vestiges of ancient Lettere, when the territory was still part of the Duchy of Amalfi

The castle of Lettere was built around the tenth century to defend the borders of the northern part, it ensured control of the two sides of the Lattari Mountains.

The castle has an ancient and troubled history, about 1300 years long. In the 6th century the Longobards, coming from Benevento, settled in the area and less than a century later the castle was built, of which today only a few run-down ruins remain. As per practice in the Middle Ages, the first inhabited nucleus developed around the fortress, what is now known as Borgo San Matteo. In the following centuries the castle hosted King Manfredi of Swabia several times, who was buried there together with his son after having lost his life during the battle of Tagliacozzo. Later the castle passed into the hands of the Angevins and the County of Sarno ended up under the control of the Kingdom of Naples. In the 15th century, before passing to the Aragonese, the castle was occupied by the Orsini family, to whom we owe the building of the Bear Tower, still visible today. In these years the castle was the scene of the famous conspiracy of the barons and the Torre dell'Orso proved to be decisive for the fate of the battle of Sarno. The history of the Sarno fortress ends in the 17th century: in 1647 it was destroyed during the repressive actions against the revolts triggered by Masaniello. Also for this reason today the fortress is a set of almost unrecognizable ruins, which emerge scattered here and there in the mountain vegetation, where the central body of the castle is more intact and still viable, albeit with great attention and effort.

Remains of the Castle to be reached only on foot

The first nucleus of the village that arose in the current municipality of Roccapiemonte was originally born in the immediate vicinity of the walls of the "Rocca di San Quirico" whose ruins are still present today. The fortress was built by the will of the Lombard prince Guaimario IV of Salerno in the year 1042 on Mount Solano with the primary purpose of defending the surrounding valleys from the Saracens who in that period continuously plundered southern Italy. Of the fortress of San Quirico currently only a few ruins remain, among which we can clearly see both the triple walls and the two gates together with the cylindrical lookout tower. The current situation of the old fortress was determined not only by continuous earthquakes including those of December of the years 1631 and 1857, but also by some allied bombings that occurred during the Second World War.

The Castle of Lettere was built by the Duchy of Amalfi during the 10th century to defend its northern borders and was part of a network of fortifications that ensured the Amalfi people control of the two sides of the Lattari mountains. The site, in fact, still enjoys a splendid panoramic position that allowed you to control the area from the port of Castellammare to the mouth of the Sarno and the entire Gulf of Naples, but also the Sarno Valley dominated by Vesuvius and the Sarno mountains up to to Pagani-
