It's pleasantly shady in here on a scorching hot day. If necessary, you can find shelter here in case of a change in the weather.

Along this path you come across some cuiles, traditional sheepfolds with stone bases and wooden and branch structures. At this point, there is one of the best preserved. Shepherds have used these structures for generations, tending pigs, goats and oxen. Since the 1950s and 1960s, these sheepfolds have been progressively abandoned, without generational change, with rare exceptions.

The small campsite directly behind the hotel in the dark forest is very rudimentary and can only be recommended to a limited extent. It seems to be run rather reluctantly (it is not advertised anywhere). The hotel itself is upscale and well attended, especially at weekends. Hikers can park in front of the hotel grounds.

The hut still stands (2024).

Ankle-high hiking boots are a must. Otherwise, it's a strenuous and demanding tour with (according to Komoot) up to 40% gradient.

"Sos cuiles," or "the sheepfolds" in Italian, represent the last testimonies of pastoral life on the remote hills of Supramonte. Until the 1960s, the shepherds from Urzulei, Baunei, Dorgali, Oliena and Orgosolo had developed a system of economic exploitation based on the breeding of goats and pigs, challenging the extreme and wild conditions of Sardinia which made any other form of survival. The Cuile Ziu Tattanu is one of these shelters, restored in 2012 to bring it back to its original Sardinian form. Today it serves as a mountain lodge with a fire pit. It is definitely possible to sleep in it.
