The archaeological area of Velia is the site of an ancient city of Magna Graecia from the 6th century BC. called Elea. There is an entrance fee and the monuments that can be visited include the Ionic temple, the tower and the Porta Rosa, one of the oldest examples of a round arch in the western world.

Novi Velia is located along the provincial road that connects Vallo della Lucania to Monte Gelbison. For this reason it is the starting point for many excursions on foot and by bicycle. The castle of Novi Velia stands on top of the hill giving the possibility to admire a 360 degree panorama.
