The castle can be seen from the ferry when you arrive in Portoferraio, it is the oldest fortification on the entire island of Elba

The castle of Volterraio is perfectly built beneath the impassable rock and dominates the northern part of the island. The excellent position was absolutely suitable for repelling attacks or serving as a refuge. When you reach the summit, you immediately discover that time has also claimed its victims here, but the fascination of this fortification has remained absolutely intact: the wall ring, the stair access over the former drawbridge, the battlement with the watchtower, the square tower, rooms and vaults , the remains of an oven, wells and cisterns, warehouses and underground passages, battlements and embrasures.

From the fortress there is a truly unique panorama, the view extends to the channel that separates the island of Elba from the coast around Piombino, with the islets Palmaiola and Cerboli, to the peninsulas of Populonia and Argentario, on Elba’s east coast and up to Giglio Island.
