Fences and even lighting were once put up - but everything is broken and demolished, the path is often overgrown and not marked. The ruins at the top are now in a much better condition than the hiking trail there. It's a shame, a lot of potential is being wasted here.

Grotteria, a small Calabrian jewel, was born around a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva, known as Eruma Atenaies between the 8th and 9th centuries BC. It became Crypta-Aurea under the emperor Hadrian due to the gold reserves in the area, and underwent Locrian, Byzantine, Norman and Swabian domination. Marked by earthquakes, it has a rich architectural history, from churches to noble palaces, such as Palazzo Lupis.

From the castle you have a beautiful view, both towards Stilo and towards Bivongi. The ascent to the castle is quite sweaty in warm weather 😅.

After the final tear that precedes the medieval castle of Placanica, we are a bit disappointed. The castle is closed and under renovation. However, if you are lucky, you can meet a kind gentleman who lives in the house adjacent to the medieval fortress who is happy to welcome you to show you the garden that once belonged to the castle and which, after careful restoration work, is now part of his home. . From here you can see the most beautiful facade of the castle and a breathtaking view, which sweeps from the hills to the sea.

Caulino is a lovely old town with a wonderful view of the sea. Remains of the Norman castle still stand.

At the beginning it is a steep uphill. With the Calabrian sun exhausting there is no shade. But wonderful short tour.
