The rocky pyramid of Rocca di Novara ("Matterhorn of Sicily") seems inaccessible...as a landmark, it can even be seen from Mount Etna! This rocky promontory has a well-maintained trail (adequately marked with red dots), making it never too difficult to climb. (Caution: Surefootedness, a head for heights, and good weather are essential!!) From the summit plateau (large metal cross with the silhouette of Christ), there is a magnificent view of the coast, the mountain villages in the hinterland of Milazzo, and the Peloritani Mountains. The starting point is a picnic area on the SS185 (which will likely be impassable from the south for some time to come due to a landslide). There are a few parking spaces along the roadside; for off-road vehicles, you can also drive up to the first bend of the picnic area. A fantastic mountain experience - and afterwards, head to the café in Novara d. Sicily -> Bar S. Niecola!

In this mandatory segment our riders enjoy the Sea, in Natural Reservoir Isola Bella before entering in Taormina The town is perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea. Besides the ancient Greek theatre, it has many old churches, lively bars, fine restaurants and antique shops. The Santuario Madonna della Rocca is one such church. Located on the slope above the town, it commands an impressive view of the coast and Mount Etna to the south, and is accessible on foot via the staired path, Salita Castello. The CP in this section will be in Piano Provenzano at 1790mt and during the climb you'll live several landscapes Mount Etna is one of the world's most active volcanoes and is in an almost constant state of activity. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, with vineyards and orchards spread across the lower slopes of the mountain. With around 2000mt in elevation, this is a crucial "flag" in RAI2020!

Matterhorn of Sicily

The bell for peace, placed on Monte Pizzo Monaco, was built to commemorate those missing from all wars, people who never returned home for whom there is no certainty of life or death. This is what makes it unique. The bell, due to its value, was blessed in the Vatican by Pope John Paul II and then returned to Antillo in 1993. Its measurements: five tons in weight and 6 meters in diameter. A unique and timeless symbol with a great and absolute message, that of redemption and peace.
