The ascent starts from Caporetto and going up the Isonzo - Soča valley floor up to Idrija it begins to climb in the direction of Livek and the Italian border. The first 4km of the climb are brutal, some hairpin bends break up the straights with an average gradient of 11%. This sector of the climb does not allow breathing space but once you arrive near the town of Livek and its plateau, the slopes soften and the landscape becomes completely alpine. The ascent via the Kolovrat ridge starts from the Solarie refuge at an altitude of 970m and first heading towards the Italian-Slovenian border, it takes the road to Livek, along one of the most panoramic and beautiful roads imaginable. The road climbs rather steeply up to the brow of the open-air museum of the Great War at about 1200 m. It should be remembered that Lieutenant Rommel operated on these roads in the days of Caporetto. From here the road follows the backbone of the Kolovrat Range with breathtaking views of the valleys below. The roadway is wide and comfortable and, at least up to Montemaggiore, on average less steep than the climb to Jeronizza, although certainly no less demanding. Immediately after the Alberone bridge, keep right towards Masseris and begin to climb gently at first and then more decisively along a series of rather grim hairpin bends.
