Just behind the North Sea dike, Vester Vedsted’s shelters offer a scenic and peaceful stop. A nearby memorial and plaques mark the old Danish-German border (1864–1920) and a restored dyke hut from the 1920s. The site is clean, includes toilet facilities, and offers stunning sunset views. Located on Eurovelo 12 and Vestkustruten, it’s popular with cyclists, so reserving ahead is wise (except for one non-reservable shelter).

Private operators and subject to fees

The good thing is that you can turn the things around. No matter where the rain and wind come from, you feel comfortable. There is water and a toilet. There was no firewood, but that is usually the case in the off-season. Any rubbish you bring with you has to be taken away again.

Can be used by everyone. The location is just great. There is also a trash can 👍

The Fugletarn observation hut is located in the Rickelsbüller Koog and offers a wonderful view of the Rickelsbüller Koogsee. It is located in the middle of the feeder road and is accessible from the German side. At the foot of the dike there is also a small information pavilion that provides information in Danish and German.

Shelters stand next to a monument honoring the dike builders who lived in this area during the work.

Beautifully located shelters, directly behind the dike. If the weather cooperates, beautiful sunsets can be observed. The shelters are generally clean and, in case of doubt, hand brushes and shovels were available to sweep through. The only downside to these shelters is that you cannot sit up straight. It can be advisable to reserve a shelter in advance, because this place is located directly on the Eurovelo 12 or Vestkustruten and is also popular with drivers. But with a bit of luck there will still be a place in the 4th shelter that cannot be reserved.
