Ovile Us Piggius is an ancient sheepfold located in the Supramonte of Baunei. The Selvaggio Blu, one of Sardinia's most spectacular treks, passes through here. This place is an ideal base for those embarking on this extraordinary adventure.

Abandoned building, lots of broken glass

The German-language television series "Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity" – which I highly recommend – dedicates a 15-minute segment to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the "NURAGHI" in Sardinia and the traditional shepherds' song known there as "Canto a Tenore." The accompanying text for the program states: "Over seven thousand round towers made of stone blocks weighing several tons are scattered throughout Sardinia. Often, only the stumps of these megalithic structures, called nuraghi, remain. The first were built around 1400 BC. Small stones were placed between the massive blocks, a construction method that made the stone towers resistant to collapse." Along this path you come across some cuiles, traditional sheepfolds with stone bases and wooden and branch structures. At this point, there is one of the best preserved. Shepherds have used these structures for generations, tending pigs, goats and oxen. Since the 1950s and 1960s, these sheepfolds have been progressively abandoned, without generational change, with rare exceptions.

The small campsite directly behind the hotel in the dark forest is very rudimentary and can only be recommended to a limited extent. It seems to be run rather reluctantly (it is not advertised anywhere). The hotel itself is upscale and well attended, especially at weekends. Hikers can park in front of the hotel grounds.
