The climb to Crown Range Pass near Queenstown is a highlight for any cyclist! 😊 Coming from the north, the ascent begins just before the town of Cardrona. The road winds gently through the landscape, past green meadows and small lakes. The higher you climb, the steeper the road becomes. The last 5 kilometers are a real test of endurance – the gradient is around 10-12%! 🚴♂️ But the view is worth it: The Remarkables mountain range rises majestically into the sky, and you can see all the way to Lake Whaika. The pass itself is at an altitude of 1,076 meters and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. From here, you can look down to Queenstown and Lake Whaika. There are also several rest areas and viewpoints where you can catch your breath and enjoy the scenery. The descent is pure fun! The road is winding and leads through breathtaking scenery. You can really let loose and enjoy the speed! 😄 Overall, the Crown Range is one of the most beautiful and challenging cycling routes in New Zealand. If you're fit and want to enjoy the views, it's a must! 👍

Start your hike as early as you can - on a fine day the summit can get pretty crowded in the late morning/early afternoon.

I would definitely recommend setting off around 2-3 hours (depending on your fitness and running speed) before sunrise. Headlamps are very helpful here. The climb is not an easy walk, but it is really worth it. In contrast to Roys Peak, you can see not only Lake Wanaka but also Lake Hāwea (over which the sun then rises). The climb is magical even at night (perhaps even better than during the day). If the visibility is clear, you will see the Milky Way as clearly and brightly as rarely anywhere else in the world. Clearly recommended over Roys Peak. Anyone looking for a real experience and not just an Instagram picture will be very happy here.

You don't necessarily have to start in Queenstown. We started in Fernhill and found it very nice. You sometimes have to watch out for mountain bikers

About halfway there is a picnic area with a good view, in case it gets too strenuous in the blazing sun (there are no more trees there either)
