During the depression of the 1930s, New Zealand introduced a subsidized gold system to combat unemployment. Hundreds of men, many with no mining experience, repopulated the country's goldfields, receiving a small weekly allowance and giving away a portion of the gold they mined. This hut dates from that era.

The hut is named after drm Track and offers several sleeping places, kitchen and toilets. However, you have to purchase an accommodation pass before, as the Heaphy Track is one of the many Great Walks.
