In 1986, a police car crashed into a street after a burst water pipe had washed out the road. This led to the rediscovery of the cellar labyrinth, which presumably stretches over 40 km. The city faced a problem because the city's structural stability was at risk. The investigation revealed that the passageways and cellars had been completely filled—partly with waste—or were still owned by private individuals. However, it was decided to preserve a 500 m labyrinth and open it to the public. Since no historical records exist regarding the cellar labyrinth, nothing is known about its use. Presumably, other goods were stored in the cellars besides wine. Small niches in the walls indicate that these were markers for the ownership of the warehouses. The cellar labyrinth consists of seven levels that were dug horizontally into the mountain and connected to each other. The cellar vaults belonged to the first person to excavate the space, regardless of which house it was located under. Tickets for the tour can be purchased online: https://www.rheinhessen.de/a-oppenheimer-kellerlabyrinth

There are several slate mines around Steeg where mining continued until the 20th century. The mines are closed with steel bars for safety reasons.

A small quarry opens up directly on the path. There a tunnel leads about 10 m into the mountain, then turns left and ends after another 10 m. If you climb straight up from here, halfway up the ridge you will find a much larger quarry with a 40m long tunnel.

In a hairpin bend in the Rheingoldstraße in the Leimbach valley, a tunnel leads deep into the mountain. At the beginning, however, this is filled with about 30 cm deep water flowing out of the mountain. After about 10 m the water ends and even with a flashlight you can't see the end. Update after exploring with waders: After 50 meters there is a cathedral from which a 150 m tunnel leads to the right. After another 100 meters, a 150 m tunnel leads to the left, before it then goes into a very large cathedral, from which 3 more tunnels branch off. The one on the left is 120 m long, the one on the right 50 m and the one in the middle leads another 200 m with a course of 355 degrees in the direction of the Rhein mine. There the water is already over the kneecaps.

There is a slate cave on the serpentine path from the Kaub ferry to the fields near Henschhausen. No tunnel, so not deep, but suitable for a group as a shelter in the rain. The cave is a long way from the Traumschleifchen, Rheinburgenweg and World Heritage Trail! The serpentine path leading to the Kaub ferry is designated as the access route to the new world heritage site.

On the slope of the Mönchholzkopf (306m) above the Mönchsrinne, a small branch path leads to an old slate mine. As is usually the case, the tunnel itself is barred in favor of the bats that live here. In the large quarry you can still see the remains of the building and some tools. At the top of the slate dump there is an (unfortunately) ailing rest bench with a table.
