Zeitweise waren 60 bis 80 Sandmacherfamilien beschäftigt, oftmals sogar Tag und Nacht, um die schweren Sandsteinbrocken abzuspalten und anschließend zu Stücken zu zertrümmern. Von der Armut und dem Leid der Sandmacher, waren auch die Kinder der Walldorfer Sandmacher hart betroffen. Um neue Käufer anzulocken, sangen die Thüringer Sandmänner nachfolgendes allseits bekannte Lied: “Der Sandmann ist da, er hat so schönen weißen Sand, ist allen Leuten wohlbekannt”… Der Absatz des Sandes und damit auch der Abbau gingen um die Jahrhundertwende rasch zurück. Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg wurde die Sandgewinnung in der Umgebung von Walldorf und Meiningen eingestellt. Viele Überlegungen und Initiativen gab es, um die Sandsteinhöhle bei Meiningen anderweitig zu nutzen. In der Zeit von 1902 bis 1912 wurde dann in der Bergwerkshöhle eine Champignonzucht betrieben. Doch die komplette Zucht, wurde von einem Schimmelpilz vernichtet und eingestellt. Im Jahre 1932 wurde die Höhle erstmalig durch einen Verein der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt.
