The lawn pond was artificially created in 1921 as part of the so-called emergency work. Since then, it has enjoyed great popularity in Ohrdruf and the surrounding area due to its park-like setting. It has become a popular local recreation destination. Initially, the lawn pond was also used for fish farming. A wide variety of plants have settled around the pond. It also provides a habitat with optimal breeding conditions for many animals. The lawn pond is approx. 1.80 m deep and has a water surface of approximately 1 hectare. It is located on the south-western outskirts of Ohrdruf, near the Aral petrol station. Its inflow comes from the springs near the Scherershütte. The water that flows out feeds the pond, the Kohlbach, and flows into the Ohra and then into the Apfelstädt. The lawn pond is still a popular destination today. The Ohrdruf fishing club monitors the fish population and takes care of the care and maintenance of the water.

The spring pond is the only standing body of water on the Steiger plateau that draws its water from a strata spring. The spring and pond are set in stone, and the pond drains via the Silbergraben through the Hopfengrund to the Gera. The milky-white lime deposits that occasionally appear in the stream, which appear "silvery" due to the water, gave it its name.
