4월 20, 2025, Yamadera Temple
Regarding footwear: hiking boots aren't absolutely necessary here; I was able to complete the temple hike easily in sneakers. The 1,000 steps are daunting at first, but are surprisingly manageable. They're spread out along a very beautiful path that leads uphill. There are plenty of opportunities to pause and enjoy the numerous statues, lanterns, and the scenery.

11월 1, 2022, Mt. Bandai's summit
Mt. Bandai (or Bandaisan), is registered as a UNESCO Japanese Geopark since 2011. Mt. Bandai has known two major sector collapses and debris avalanches: one 50,000 years ago and the latest in 1888. The first sector collapse is said to have led to the formation of the famous Inawashiro lake. The second one in 1888 was a phreatic eruption. Unlike the destructive magmatic eruptions in most volcanoes, the explosion in Mt. Bandai consisted of high-temperature steam, preserving a large part of the surrounding flora.

This hut offers a space to rest, buy souvenirs or have some snacks, but doesn't accept visitors for the night. Please make sure to plan your hike so that you complete the visit before the night falls.

11월 1, 2022, Mt. Kushigamine
Mt. Bandai is crossed by three peaks: Mt. Bandai's central peak, Kushigamine's peak, and Mt. Akahani's peak. Kushigamine can be recognized by its reddish/brownish rocky paths. The northeast side suffered a big phreatic explosion in 1888, leaving its landscapes marked by the consequences of landslides and debris avalanches. The mountain's name: "the comb peak," was given for the sharp shape of its southern side that looks like a comb's teeth.

11월 1, 2022, Akanuma pond
This marsh's (which is actually Mt. Bandai's caldera lake) reddish color is due to the erosion of the surrounding rocks after the many eruptions in Mt. Bandai, leaving extensive deposits of iron hydroxide in the pond's bed. The pond's water is very acidic and rich in sulfur, iron, manganese, and aluminum.

5월 15, 2019, Aomori Bay Area Sculptures and ASPAM Tower
The bay of Aomori is blessed with many activities, including some architectural marvels and many shopping opportunities. The unique Warasse Nebuta Museum presents the history and culture of Aomori's beloved Nebuta Festival - and is a great stop for those who do not travel through the region during the August festivals. A-Factory offers a cider brewery (with Aomori apple and tasting options), cafes and shops filled to the brim with souvenirs, especially apple-based products. It is located just in front of the sprawling Bay Bridge, which spans the bay area and dominates the skyline. Next door is the Hakkodamaru, a historic ship from 1964, but today it is practically a commemorative ship that can be entered and visited. Further east is the Prefectural Tourism Center ASPAM.

5월 14, 2019, Hakkoda Maru Memorial Ship
Until the opening of the Seikan Tunnel in 1988, ferries were the main means of transport between Honshu and Hokkaido, and Aomori served as a hub for ferry-to-ferry transfers. With the opening of the railway tunnel, the ferries lost much of their importance, although car ferries still connect Aomori with Hakodate today. One of the former ferries, the Hakkodamaru (八甲 田 丸, Hakkōdamaru), today serves as a memorial to the bygone era. After their last journey in 1988, the Hakkodamaru retreated to the port of Aomori, where it remains permanently moored as a museum ship. Two of their sister ships, the Masumaru and the Yoteimaru, have also been converted into museum ships and can be seen in the port of Hakodate or in the Maritime Museum in Odaiba.

5월 14, 2019, Aomori Bay Bridge
The Aomori Bay Bridge at 1219 meters is the longest bridge in the city of Aomori. The focus was on the aesthetics of the bridge, so the total cost of construction was around 27 billion yen (¥), compared to only 8.9 billion yen for the longer Hachinohe Ōhashi bridge. An example of emphasizing the appearance of the bridge is the ornamentation of the letter "A" for "Aomori" in various places such as the base of the bridge and in the form of the suspension ropes. The use of the letter "A" continues in the nearby Aomori Prefecture Sightseeing Products Mansion, or ASPAM Building, which is built in the shape of a triangle to look like the original "A". In response to the longtime problems of the bridge with ice in the winter months, it was planned to lay pipes under the road surface that circulate seawater to melt the ice. Due to cost and construction time problems, however, only a section could be completed. So far, there is no indication as to when the system will be used over the remainder of the bridge as originally planned. Nevertheless, the number of traffic accidents since the installation of the system has dropped drastically.
