The Aomori Bay Bridge at 1219 meters is the longest bridge in the city of Aomori.
The focus was on the aesthetics of the bridge, so the total cost of construction was around 27 billion yen (¥), compared to only 8.9 billion yen for the longer Hachinohe Ōhashi bridge. An example of emphasizing the appearance of the bridge is the ornamentation of the letter "A" for "Aomori" in various places such as the base of the bridge and in the form of the suspension ropes. The use of the letter "A" continues in the nearby Aomori Prefecture Sightseeing Products Mansion, or ASPAM Building, which is built in the shape of a triangle to look like the original "A".
In response to the longtime problems of the bridge with ice in the winter months, it was planned to lay pipes under the road surface that circulate seawater to melt the ice. Due to cost and construction time problems, however, only a section could be completed. So far, there is no indication as to when the system will be used over the remainder of the bridge as originally planned. Nevertheless, the number of traffic accidents since the installation of the system has dropped drastically.
