The castle looks more like a large farmstead than it does like a castle from the outside. You can see it over the fence from the path that runs directly along the road. However, you cannot enter the property.

Two paths beautifully laid out as an avenue parallel to each other lead directly to the castle. From the castle you can see between the two avenues directly to the lake and the Alps. The carriage ride to the castle (chargeable) of course leads along the avenue.

The third in the group of state palaces built by Ludwig II. Clearly more straightforward and less fanciful than Neuschwanstein, never quite finished, but something special due to its location on the island in Lake Chiemsee. Arriving by boat helps to manage the crowds that come here in high season, but it's also a really nice way to start the trip.

If you take the ship to Herreninsel, a visit to the Chorherrenstift, also known as the Old Castle, is a good idea. The exhibition is simple but very interesting. There are several exhibitions, the largest part is certainly that about the 1948 constitutional convention. The path to the Basic Law is presented very clearly. There is also a picture gallery.
