A popular asphalt stretch leads around the 43 hectare Edderitzer See. This can be hiked within an hour and offers an insight into the flora and fauna that have already returned. After more than 100 years of lignite mining in Edderitz, the open-cast mine was shut down in the 1960s. The remaining hole, which filled with groundwater and rainwater, soon became a much-visited swimming lake.
