The Kreidesee (Chalk Lake) in Lüneburg (also called Kreidebergsee) is a former gypsum and limestone quarry. It has developed into a popular recreational area north of the city center, known for its depth of up to 30 meters, impressive white limestone cliffs, and valuable salt-tolerant flora. However, swimming is prohibited for safety reasons. The Kreidesee is ideal for walks and geology enthusiasts. The lake originated from a former gypsum and limestone quarry. It is located north of Lüneburg's city center, in the Kreideberg district. It is up to 30 meters deep. It is captivating due to its unique features: white limestone cliffs up to 30 meters high and a rare salt-tolerant flora, which is a result of its proximity to the Lüneburg salt dome. It is a wonderful place for walking and hiking. There are paths around the lake, which also lead through the allotment gardens and offer panoramic views of Lüneburg. Benches are available. A visit is highly recommended.

The Kreidebergsee lake was formed by lime and gypsum mining, which, alongside salt mining, has been of enormous importance in Lüneburg for centuries. Starting in 1838, the lime quarry was expanded to include a high-performance lime kiln as part of its industrial use. Thanks to its abundant raw materials, which at that time were largely used for house construction and agriculture, the lime kiln was very successful. At the turn of the century, jobs were created for 300 to 400 people. Thus, the lime kiln was considered the largest employer of its time. In 1963, lime and gypsum mining in the area was discontinued because the operation had not been economically viable for several years. In addition, more and more residential developments were being built near the area, which caused the residents to feel disturbed by the lime kiln. As a result, the water pumps were shut down, and the pit slowly filled up to the groundwater level. The resulting lake was subsequently used as a garbage and construction waste dump until 1983, when it was developed into a local recreation area. Source: https://www.luenepedia.de/wiki/Kreidebergsee

The Gut Schnede fishing ponds are easily accessible between Hamburg, Soltau and Lüneburg. The fishing facility has 3 trout lakes with a total water area of 13,500 m². The facility is open daily from March to December. Because of the very low prices, the fishing lakes are always busy, so you should be there in good time to get a good spot. https://www.angelsee.info/ort/angelteiche-gut-schnede/

The Kreidebergsee in Lüneburg is a beautiful local recreation area located north of the city center. The lake was created by lime and gypsum mining and was converted into a 14.5 hectare recreation area in the 1980s. The impressive limestone cliffs and the rare salt flora make the Kreidebergsee an ecologically valuable place. The lake is up to 30 meters deep and is fed by groundwater and rainwater. It is a popular destination for walks and offers beautiful views of the surrounding nature and the city of Lüneburg. Due to its geomorphological features, some specially adapted plant species can be found there that are otherwise rare.

Anyone looking for a walk or bike ride along the water and in nature in Lüneburg on a nice day doesn't have to travel far. Just a few steps north of the city center lies a small and exquisite paradise: The Kreidebergsee. Fascinating for geologists and historians, relaxing for those seeking peace and quiet and city dwellers on hot days – this lake is a true gem of Lüneburg's versatility. www.leuphana.de/lueneplaner/2017/01/30/der-kreidebergsee

Fish farming on the Schnede In the northeast of Lower Saxony, between Garstedt and Salzhausen, you pass large fish ponds and a villa in the South American style in the middle of the forest: Haus Schnede. In 1909 the stately home was built by the Hamburg merchant family Wiedenbrüg. She had made her fortune in Argentina with cattle breeding and viticulture and incorporated some style elements from South America into the spacious architecture. Consul Wiedenbrüg bought the Schnede forest and the Weddermöde farm as early as 1908. There, in the headwaters of the Schnede and in the area of the Luhe, with over 300 ponds, he set up what was then Europe's largest trout farm. However, after financial difficulties in the 1920s, the property went downhill. The huge estate was divided up and sold. One of the numerous outbuildings of the former estate was the home of the forester, who was also the head of the fishmasters. It was built in 1911 north of the manor house with a hatchery in the basement directly above a spring - and is now the headquarters of the Nordbach fish farm. Salmonids have been laid and brooded here for over 100 years. The pond management with its current system was founded in 1985 by Volker Buchtmann and managed until 2014. We reopened it in 2015. https://www.nordbach.de/historie/

The Kreidebergsee, a local recreation area located directly in the center of Lüneburg, offers a nice opportunity to take a walk in the countryside - here there are beautiful views of the limestone cliffs, and from the upper paths there is a panoramic view of Lüneburg. The Kreidebergsee was created by gypsum mining and was converted into a 14.5-hectare recreational area in the 1980s. Due to the rare salt flora, the lake is ecologically very valuable and lets you really "breathe". http://www.lueneburg-erleben.de/en/sehenswert/Umwelt/kreidebergsee.html
