The Kreidesee (Chalk Lake) in Lüneburg (also called Kreidebergsee) is a former gypsum and limestone quarry. It has developed into a popular recreational area north of the city center, known for its depth of up to 30 meters, impressive white limestone cliffs, and valuable salt-tolerant flora. However, swimming is prohibited for safety reasons. The Kreidesee is ideal for walks and geology enthusiasts. The lake originated from a former gypsum and limestone quarry. It is located north of Lüneburg's city center, in the Kreideberg district. It is up to 30 meters deep. It is captivating due to its unique features: white limestone cliffs up to 30 meters high and a rare salt-tolerant flora, which is a result of its proximity to the Lüneburg salt dome. It is a wonderful place for walking and hiking. There are paths around the lake, which also lead through the allotment gardens and offer panoramic views of Lüneburg. Benches are available. A visit is highly recommended.

The Kreidebergsee lake was formed by lime and gypsum mining, which, alongside salt mining, has been of enormous importance in Lüneburg for centuries. Starting in 1838, the lime quarry was expanded to include a high-performance lime kiln as part of its industrial use. Thanks to its abundant raw materials, which at that time were largely used for house construction and agriculture, the lime kiln was very successful. At the turn of the century, jobs were created for 300 to 400 people. Thus, the lime kiln was considered the largest employer of its time. In 1963, lime and gypsum mining in the area was discontinued because the operation had not been economically viable for several years. In addition, more and more residential developments were being built near the area, which caused the residents to feel disturbed by the lime kiln. As a result, the water pumps were shut down, and the pit slowly filled up to the groundwater level. The resulting lake was subsequently used as a garbage and construction waste dump until 1983, when it was developed into a local recreation area. Source: https://www.luenepedia.de/wiki/Kreidebergsee

The Osterbach flows from Kirchgellersen through the Böhmsholz into the Hasenburger Mühlenbach and is currently being renaturalized. Shortly before its mouth, it feeds the Osterbachteich. This is a home for water birds. However, it is increasingly silting up.
