The I. Wiek-See was laid out in 1995/96 in the course of the construction of the new test area for Mercedes Benz. After the sand excavation was completed, it was determined that a natural landscape lake should develop for use. Due to its natural development, the body of water is currently inhabited by native fish species.The use of the body of water and the property was permitted to the Papenburg sports fishing club with the following restrictions or under the following conditions: The body of water is an important resting area for various species of swans, sawdaws, ducks and divers. In order to maintain these functions without restrictions, any use of the water is excluded from November 1st to February 28th of the following year. In the period between March 15th and June 15th it is forbidden to enter the north shore of the lake, in the other areas special consideration must be given to birds that are brooding and rearing young. The Bokeler Volkspark is an inner-city recreational area between Friderikenstraße and the railway line, a popular place for Papenburg residents for relaxed walks around the lakes with and without a dog. When the weather is nice, it's always busy here. The place, which has grown over the past 40 years, is very idyllic.

Between Ermsterwegen and Hilkenbrook lies the beautifully landscaped swimming and recreational lake known as Erikasee. With its 4 hectares and its 200-meter-long sandy beach, as well as its surroundings, Erikasee offers a comprehensive range of amenities for a varied stay, including an adventure playground, mini-golf course, archery range, skate park, and two barbecue areas. Restroom facilities such as toilets, etc., can be found at the adjacent campsite. During the swimming season, a kiosk also operates, offering drinks, ice cream, coffee, cake, and more. All in all, Erikasee is quite a success and well worth a visit.
