A small, worthwhile detour on my tour! The Lohne Watermill is idyllically situated on the river and offers a lovely place to linger. The historic building is well-preserved and, with its old mill wheel, looks truly picturesque – perfect for a few photos. The water flows gently right next to it, creating a relaxing atmosphere.

I drove past there in the spring and the pool was still closed, but it looked good 😀

The 7.3-hectare Citizen Climate Park expands the Hopener Wald recreation area and is located in the immediate vicinity of the fish ponds and the renaturalized Mühlenbach stream. It can be reached from Lohne city center in five minutes by bike. The project is funded by the federal program "Adaptation of Urban Spaces to Climate Change." It is a former agricultural area that we will transform into a more diverse natural area in the coming years. A mosaic of implemented measures and "citizen projects" is emerging, with which we set a model and try to better prepare nature and ourselves for the consequences of climate change. The octagonal brick building in Lohne's city park was built in 1859 as a combined wind and water mill. There is evidence that there were already two previous mills nearby. To ensure that there was always enough water available to operate the mill, Pastor Heinrich von dem Kampe (died 1882) had the area behind the watermill, the "Wellen" and the mill pond, dug out as a water reservoir. In 1950, the interior of the mill was converted into a restaurant and a café. Rowing parties took place on the mill pond at that time. The building has been owned by the city since 1975; after thorough renovation and the installation of a new water wheel, it has been available to the "Kunstverein Die Wassermühle e.V." for exhibitions since 1982. The cultural monument is part of an ensemble that includes the Möhring farm, the mill pond, the city park and the open-air stage. On March 7, 2014, the watermill was reopened after further renovation and expansion with an exhibition by Helmut Helmes. The mill wheel has also been restored and will generate electricity in the future. The building is used for events during exhibition-free periods such as readings or concerts and is also a popular place for weddings. https://nordkreis-vechta.de/wasserm%C3%BChle/32991

The Tonkuhle outdoor pool on Tannenweg in Vechta was created from a pit that was created by clay mining for the neighboring Vormoor brickworks (in operation until 1967). Due to its idyllic location and good water quality, it has been a popular bathing facility since 1932. In the 1960s, the current barracks with changing rooms and showers were built. At some point, a concrete pool with chlorinated water was added. The pool was later demolished. In 1990, the Tonkuhle was converted into a natural pool. When the city wanted to close the outdoor pool and then level it, fans of the cult pool founded a citizens' initiative. With success. In 2001, the Tonkuhle was privatized and given its new name "Toncoole".
