The lake was created by local gravel extraction starting in 1922. It covers an area of approximately 70 hectares with a maximum depth of twelve meters. The lake is surrounded by large pine and mixed forests, including the Schweinert nature reserve, which contains one of the largest Bronze Age burial mound fields in Europe.

Unfortunately, you can't walk all the way around it, as there is no way to go any further on the other side of the lake (from Frankenberg/Elster). But you can still see a lot of the beautiful lake.

The devil also seemed to have had a hand in shaping the landscape in Mühlberg and the surrounding area. In contrast to Lusatia, nothing here is built on coal, but on lots of sand and gravel. And this is particularly high quality and is loved by civil engineers. They installed it, among other things, in the Berlin city highway and in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie.

A stretch for cycling and walking

In beautiful nature there is at least one covered bench for breaks.

The Kiebitzsee offers a worthwhile excursion destination from the stylish beach promenade with numerous restaurants and many play facilities for big and small children to the idyllic nudist beach.

The lake view at Kiebitzsee is one of the few places in the renaturation area where you should go right up to the water, otherwise there are many prohibition signs on this side of the lake.
